Donald Trump vowed on Wednesday to destroy an Iranian bridge or power plant in retaliation for any future attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. This sharp escalation follows threats from Yemen’s Houthi rebels to blockade Saudi oil exports in the Red Sea, forcing multiple tankers to reroute and driving oil prices to a six-week high. In response to the U.S. warning, Tehran threatened to target regional infrastructure.
The military conflict is simultaneously intensifying. The U.S. conducted its 11th consecutive night of airstrikes, expanding its targets to central and western Iran, including areas near the country’s sole nuclear plant in Bushehr. Meanwhile, Iran launched drone and missile attacks on U.S. military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan. As Trump mourned four of the 18 U.S. troops killed in the conflict so far, diplomatic efforts remained strained. While mediators proposed a 10-day ceasefire, Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed Tehran’s commitment to peace, with analysts viewing the new Houthi blockade as a tactical move to gain negotiating leverage.
