Canadian Wildfire Season Remains Manageable So Far, but Heat and Drought Bring Risks
While the 2026 Canadian wildfire season has been manageable so far thanks to significant rainfall in Western Canada, hotter-than-average temperatures and lower precipitation forecast for large swaths of northern and eastern regions this summer keep the risk levels high.

Official data indicates that there have been approximately 3,100 fires so far this season, slightly higher than the 2,900 recorded at this time last year. However, the total area burned is significantly lower, covering about 12,000 square kilometers compared to 46,000 square kilometers during the same period last year. Meanwhile, in British Columbia, wildfires near the community of Boston Bar have destroyed several buildings and forced hundreds of residents to evacuate. For context, the 2025 season remains the second-worst on record, with over 89,000 square kilometers burned across the country.
