Unprecedented heat and dry conditions have triggered devastating forest fires across Europe, threatening historic French woodlands and claiming lives in Spain, while disrupting regional energy infrastructure.
A massive wildfire has consumed over 800 hectares in the historic Fontainebleau forest near Paris, prompting road closures and the deployment of water-bombing aircraft. Meanwhile, blazes in Spain’s Almeria province have resulted in 13 fatalities, including a British couple. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez linked the increasing severity of these fires directly to climate change. The extreme weather is also straining the energy grid; high river temperatures have knocked out about 14% of France’s nuclear capacity, and record-low water levels on the Rhine are limiting fuel transport to Germany and Switzerland.
